Last Weekend

In my humble opinion, you have not lived until you've fallen asleep in the outdoors next to an open fire.  Add some loons calling out over the lake and your son by your side and you've got it made.  In case you've never experienced it, you gotta trust me that it really gives you perspective.

Low's Lake in the Adk Park is one of my favorite places in the world.  Last weekend Austin and I repeated our 2005 trek there, and spent three amazing days...16+ miles by kayak, no homes, no lights, very few fellow travelers, the biggest loon population in the park, and untouched nature everywhere.  Amazing.

A Praise Post: The Cap'n

So, having just returned from another wonderful visit to perhaps the world's best "undiscovered" blog, I am wondering why on earth I even decided to start my own. My friend Steve Babcock writes one of the most entertaining, warm, humorous, and intelligent blogs I have ever encountered. It's no surprise, actually, having been amazed by this guy for years now (seems crazy how long it's been at this point). You see he is a rare mix, this dude: Great husband and father, creative writer, funny as can be, talented musician...I mean, I guess I don't really know what the heck a Renaissance man is, but I suppose it may be Steve.

Come to think of it, I guess this may be one reason for me to write a blog, so if anyone makes it here I can redirect them to his place. One word of caution: you WILL be hooked.

Adirondacks

It's no secret to those who know me how much I love where I live, specifically right on the southern edge of one of the best places on Earth, The Adirondack Park.  I actually think at times that  I've taken this particular passion just  a bit too far.  My license plate on my SUV is ADKPRK, on my Harley it's ADKMTN.  My office is full of books on the park, trail maps, atlases, picture books, you name it.  I am a regular visitor to the Adirondack Forum (which i highly recommend www.adkforum.com) where my username is adk365.  I love the towns, the people, the lakes and rivers, the mountains.  I hike it, climb it, paddle it, bike it, and ski it.   My family has two properties up North, one on a lake where I spent all my summers throughout my childhood, and the other  on 100 acres featuring a beautifully built hunting lodge that my father, in particular,  has put considerable time and love into for the sake of present and  future generations. You see, it's in my blood, this place. My parents taught me to love it, and it stuck.

the semi-generic 1st post

Happy Monday, August 4th.  Finally ... a blog post, thank you late night coffee.

Fam is sleeping, and I'm sitting here listening to my  favorite new musical guy Jon Hopkins, from the UK.  It's been an interesting year so far,  frustration and boredom, new vision and change, strength and friendship and love and family, and finally fresh adventures which I hope to share regularly here.
